Host:Dr. Vishal Kapoor
Biography:
Dr. Mark Eldridge joined Newcastle University’s Biosciences Institute in the summer of 2024. He previously worked at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Bethesda, USA, where he studied the neural correlates of visual memory and reward value. During his time at the NIMH, Mark pioneered the use of chemogenetic technology in nonhuman primates (NHP).
Abstract:
Dr. Eldridge’s current research in NHP focuses on demonstrating the utility of molecular genetic tools for basic applications - such as studying visual memory; and translational applications - such as in the treatment of anxiety disorders and addiction.
In this talk, Dr Eldridge will describe the use of pathway-selective chemogenetics to reveal a role for prefrontal-striatal projections in stimulus-reward learning, some preliminary findings with chemogenetics + PET imaging in Area TE to bias object recognition and categorization, and cell type-specific optogenetic activation to study object recognition in perirhinal cortex.
