Biography:
Ewald Weber is a Senior Research Officer with the University of Queensland (Biomedical Engineering Group) and has over thirty-five years of experience in the research and development environment of medical imaging equipment. He has designed a large variety of multi-functional MRI coils, i.e. suitable for simultaneous observing of different nuclei, applicable for imaging, high resolution spectroscopy of organs or functional imaging of the human brain. Ewald’s long-term and research-focused involvement in the MRI industry and his novel hardware led to significant technical progress in RF-coil technology. This is evidenced by his patented IP, many of which has been adopted or is ready to be implemented by the MRI industry. He is a CI on competitive research grants and strongly involved in consultancy and commercialisation activities to leading MRI industry partners (Bruker Biospin Germany, Siemens Healthcare, Sanofi Aventis, Magnetica Limited Australia).
Abstract:
Ultra-high field MRI systems for small animals have seen rapid development over recent years in a continuous effort to enhance SNR and spectral resolution of MRI images. To circumvent the associated high-field B1 inhomogeneity problem, methods such as RF shimming and Transmit SENSE have been proposed. To benefit from the advantages of these techniques, dedicated phased-array coils with spatially varying transmit-sensitivity of the array elements are essential. Each element of the phased array coil can be driven by an independent RF channel with an individual excitation profile. This talk will address engineering challenges and solutions in preclinical RF‑coil design and construction, with a focus on achieving the desired application aims.
