Columnar and diffuse topographies in the marmoset prefrontal connectome

Date:Jul 20, 2023

In the issue of Neuron, dated July 19th 2023, a preview article entitled ‘Columnar and diffuse topographies in the marmoset prefrontal connectome’ by Vishal Kapoor of ICPBR (Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences) was published. It highlights an exciting study published in the same issue by Watakabe et al(entitled: Local and long-distance organization of prefrontal cortex circuits in the marmoset brain), which describes the topographic organization of anatomical connectivity of the marmoset prefrontal cortex. The preview summarizes the experiments and the key results of this interesting paper, and discusses these findings in light of previous research about the anatomical connectivity of the macaque prefrontal cortex and the implications for mediating higher-order cognition.  In addition, it suggests questions for future research, about how such columnar organization of prefrontal connectivity changes with postnatal cognitive development to testing, or the implications it may have for the distribution and processing of information across the brain.
