On May 28, 2025, Dr. Evrard Lab of ICPBR (Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences) published “The Isle of Craig: Neuroanatomical and Functional Evidence for a Role of the Insular Cortex in Subjective Feelings” in Current Topics in Behavioral Neurosciences.
This article is part of an issue honoring the life and career of A.D. (Bud) Craig, who discovered the primate interoceptive pathway and identified the anterior insular cortex as a crucial node within networks substantiating human self-awareness.
The article details Bud Craig’s seminal work and extends his theory of posterior-to-mid-to-anterior integration of interoception in the primate insula by suggesting that the primary interoceptive cortex represents in fact the subcortical hierarchical interoceptive neuroaxis, leading to a new “latticework” model of the insular cortex.
