Prof. Nikos Logothetis, Co-Director of the International Centre for Primate Brain Research (ICPBR), Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has been elected as an Academician of the World Academy of Artificial Consciousness (WAAC), the center announced.
Founded in 2025, WAAC is an international academic organization that brings together the world's leading scientists to advance cutting-edge research and international cooperation in the interdisciplinary field of artificial consciousness. Membership is by invitation only and is extended to experts with outstanding and internationally recognized achievements in fields such as neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science. WAAC's academician body currently includes eight Nobel laureates and one Turing Award winner.
Prof. Logothetis received this honor in recognition of his transformative contributions to cognitive neuroscience. Over the past three decades, his research has focused on understanding the organization of brain networks underlying perception, decision-making, learning, and memory. He developed and refined an internationally acclaimed methodology that combines intracranial recordings of local neural activity with functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) of the entire brain—a breakthrough that has provided unprecedented insights into how brain structures interact during cognitive processes. His work has also guided clinical applications, including deep-brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease.
This election is a well-deserved recognition of Prof. Logothetis's lifelong dedication to understanding the brain. We are truly proud to have him as our Co-Director and a member of our community. CEBSIT extends its warmest congratulations to him on this distinguished achievement.
