The Laboratory of Circuits of Cognition and Control (C³), led by Dr. Amirsaman Sajad at the International Center for Primate Brain Research (ICPBR), CEBSIT, Chinese Academy of Sciences, is seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join a growing, international team in Shanghai. Our lab investigates the neural mechanisms supporting intelligent adaptive behavior — how the brain learns the structure of a changing environment, makes inferences and decisions, and controls behavior during visuomotor tasks. At the heart of our work are multi-areal, high-density laminar recordings of intracranial neural activity in the frontal cortex of behaving non-human primates while performing visuomotor cognitive tasks. These recordings let us uncover the underlying microcircuitry and network interactions, and track how neural representations are formed and transformed across brain areas and over time.
We acquire these signals simultaneously with EEG and other physiological markers (such as eye-tracking), so that circuit-level mechanisms can be related to the non-invasive signatures measurable outside the brain. Building on this foundation of visuomotor cognitive tasks, laminar intracranial recordings, and simultaneous EEG, the lab is pursuing an ambitious mission in cognitive, non-invasive brain–computer interfaces (BCI): reading out cognitive and visuomotor processes from non-invasive signals, grounded in an understanding of their circuit origins.
The work is highly collaborative — including partnerships with data-center and AI experts — and offers a clear path to high-impact, first-author publications.
Responsibilities:
- Lead multi-areal, high-density laminar neural recordings in behaving non-human primates, including behavioral training and daily recording sessions.
- Run parallel human experiments (behavior, EEG, eye-tracking) using the same cognitive tasks.
- Analyze rich, multimodal datasets and develop analysis methods, in collaboration with data-center and AI experts.
- Drive the project from design through publication, in close collaboration with the PI.
- Mentor and collaborate with research assistants and graduate students.
Qualifications:
Required
- PhD (completed or near completion) in Neuroscience, Biomedical or Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Psychology, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience with non-human primate research (behavioral training and/or neural recordings).
- Strong programming skills in MATLAB and/or Python.
- Experience analyzing neural, physiological, or behavioral data.
- Ability to work independently and lead a hypothesis-driven project
- A collaborative, proactive, and curious approach to science.
Preferred
- Experience with non-human primate model.
- Experience with intracranial electrophysiology and/or laminar recordings.
- Experience with EEG and eye-tracking.
- Machine-learning, signal-processing, or neural-decoding expertise.
